The FFTS is the manufacturing arm of the CFMEU in Victoria. We are taking up the fight for manufacturing jobs in the glass and furniture-making industries.
When Australian union members make our furniture and glass products, then you can be sure that you will:
Governments, retailers, construction companies and individuals can all help by insisting on UNION MADE, AUSTRALIAN MADE glass and furniture products.
Do your bit for the global environment and Australian jobs, and insist on Aussiemade glass and furniture products at work, on the job and at home.
Means you get quality products
When it comes furniture, we all know that many imported products are just not up to the job. While some are cheap, they will not last long.
By buying the better-quality unionmade product, we are getting quality that will last. Some of this furniture made from Australian timber will last more than a lifetime - you can pass it onto your kids. This is also the case when it comes to doors and windows in your home. If you are building a home, ask the builder if they are giving you quality, local doors and windows. Don't get ripped off with low-quality imported doors and windows. For your home, you need local union-made quality that will add value to your home and last the distance.
Did you know that much of the furniture from South East Asia that you see in shops has been ripped out of native rainforests? These countries do not have the environmental protections, forestry controls and safeguards that exist here in Australia. So if you want to protect the rainforests of the world, then give the imported timbers a miss and buy local furniture made from plantation timbers and recovered woods.
The biggest reason that advertisers give you for buying imported glass and furniture is that they are cheap. This is a lie. They are not cheap. All too often, their production cost workers' lives in other countries. Should we really buy things made in conditions that we would not accept here? Every time we buy sweatshopproduced furniture, we are rewarding greedy retailers and exploitative overseas bosses. Basic safety standards and union rights do not exist in many poor countries. When you buy local union-made products, you know that you have not made others suffer for your bookcase or table.
The skills required to make quality furniture or craft glass are not learnt easily or quickly. It takes years to build up skills that can give people a livelihood for a lifetime. We must support our current trades so that they can train up the next generation of craftspeople. If we turn our backs on local quality-made glass and furniture, then we can kiss future local jobs goodbye forever.
