MDF Fibreboard - Is it a health hazard in your workplace?

There is a long list of health problems that are caused by unsafe exposure to MDF, these include:

  • Asthma and damage of your lungs
  • Nose bleeds or violent sneezing
  • Throat irritations
  • Sore or watering eyes
  • Skin disorders such as allergic dermatitis
  • Cancer

Although MDF is quite safe in its normal form, the dangers arise when it is cut and MDF dust is in the air - unfortunately, a situation many FFTS members face everyday. The dangers arise because of the poisonous chemical formaldehyde, which is used in the production of manufactured wood such as MDF. It is critical that employers provide specific control measures to reduce the risks of working with MDF. Make sure that when you are cutting MDF the following protective equipment is provided:

  • P2 cartridge filter respirator
  • Hearing protection
  • Eye protection
  • Overalls

Also, if you have been working with MDF, you must thoroughly wash your face, hands and arms before a tea or meal break. Don't let your employers put your health at risk. If you think you or fellow employees are being unsafely exposed to MDF (or have been in the past), contact the union as soon as possible.
